Project mission

KARATE aimed at a circular economy of waste feathers from poultry farms.
It will develop a scalable and economically sustainable protocol for the recovery and reuse of keratin extracted from these residues, with the aim of making smart textiles based on derivatives of this protein.
At present, the recovery and recycling of the possible functional raw materials is almost non-existent, since poultry waste is generally burnt in waste-to-energy plants or disposed of in waste-to-energy plants or disposed of in landfills. The project will developed an enzymatic method to extract keratin from waste feathers, and subsequently to modify its structure and properties so that it can be used in the textile industry and in the biomedical sector.
